Luke, I don't like this

Luke 4:13, "And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed him until an opportune time."

All is good and well until the whole "until an opportune time" statement. What is that?! I've heard this scripture taught before and usually it's a time to show how cool and strong Jesus is and highlights His power over Satan. All true. But we shouldn't just pick and choose scriptures that makes us feel all warm inside.

This scripture is so important. Scripture is clear that Jesus was tempted with every temptation Satan could throw at Him (Hebrews 4:14-16) just like we are. One big difference - Jesus is God and we are not. There were "opportune" times in Jesus' life where, like this, Satan was there jeering and spewing lies. I can't even imagine the absolute physical and mental torture He went through on the cross. Just try to think about the temptations jerk-face Satan hurled at Him as He (God of the universe, creator of Satan) is hanging on a cross like an low-life. Oh my.

I believe this is a warning for us. A big neon flashing sign from God. If it was a roadside bill-board it would read, Dude. Just because he gave up this time doesn't mean he's not coming back. Expect it. You pissed him off!

This is why in Luke 4 Jesus constantly combats Satan's schemes with scripture. When we have the Word of God secured in our hearts and minds we can fight the attacks of the enemy. Satan is not going to ever stop tempting or trying to kill, steal and destroy but if equipped we can give him a good butt kicking.

We have hope in times of struggle because Jesus completely gets what we are going through. Not to mention when He died He went into hell, took the keys and did an awesome victory dance all the up to the throne room of Heaven. In dying and rising Jesus windmill kicked Satan in the face and soon (come on Lord!) will squish him like a little bug! Amen.

If you haven't already start your life-athon training. Get scripture in your head. Secure your heart. Keep your sword ready. Satan might be around the corner but when he swoops in to take you out he won't know what hit him.
