This week I have been diving into the book of Luke for my morning reading. Luke is my favorite gospel "according to". There's something about the way he wrote that makes the most sense to me. And I love the stories he including in his writing of the gospel!
As I've been reading my missional heart has been stirred, poked, punched - you get it.
Luke 2:49 says, "And he said to them, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" I read this verse and a soft voice inside my heart asked, 'can you say the same thing?'
Ok, now reach up and see if my nose is bleeding. Nope. Oh good! I have read this verse so many times before. And some how, some way I never read it as instruction until now. Scripture tells us we are to imitate Christ. What we see Him do in scriptures, we should do the same.
Now today the context is a bit different. As believers we have Holy Spirit and our bodies are His temple. Christ dwells on the inside of us. So people should find me studying scripture, living a lifestyle of prayer, worshipping with the body of Christ. {Being in my Father's house} But do they?
Skip ahead to Luke 5:16, "But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray." Now I'm no theological genius BUT I think these scriptures go together.
As a youngster Jesus made it clear He was on the path of righteousness (setting the best example) and that He must be in His Father's house learning, praying, teaching. He set His gaze on the Father. Scripture says in the gospel of John, Jesus only did what He saw His Father doing.
Jesus knew the Father and imitated Him. Why? Because He prayed. He got into the secret place, He withdrew from the crowds, the distractions of the world and He prayed.
[Right hook]...
When we dig into scripture Holy Spirit loving reveals truths and opens a big can of
3 Lessons from Luke:
1. Get in your Father's house (spend A LOT of time with Him and read the Word!)
2. Pray, pray, pray (get to know the Father so you can do what He does)
3. Never stop doing 1 & 2
Jesus likes you a lot and He really enjoys spending time with you! Happy Friday!
